Why is the US dollar suddenly stronger?

In the midst of the financial crisis, I'm very curious how the US dollar keeps gaining on currencies such as EUR, GBP, CAD, and AUD. I understand the recent crisis isn't limited to the borders of the US, but it just strikes me as odd that the dollar itself seems to be getting quite strong lately.
